Make your own facial Scrub – A great alternative to plastic microbeads.

face scrub

Microbeads have got quite a lot of attention in the last few weeks due to Present Obama banning these in the US from July 1 2017.

Micro beads are small plastic beads that are put in conventional personal care products such as facial scrubs, mouthwash and even age defying makeup!!!! They are also in things like washing powders. They are so incredibly small they can’t be filtered out of the water so they end up in our lakes and oceans.

Microbeads have Bisphenol A (BPA) in them, which is a known hormone disrupter to the human body as it can mimic oestrogen, which has actually been known since the 1930’s. They not only enter our bodies through our skin , but they also are consumed by fish that we eat and potentially even the water we drink. So far microbeads have been found in 27 different sites in Sydney Harbour.

This animation does a fabulous summary of the micro beads.

Unfortunately Australia has not followed the US with the ban as our government quite frankly has no balls when it comes to protecting the environment. God forbid a company has to incur some costs to remove these beads from there products. What about the cost to the environment and our health?

There is however some large companies that have also taken the initiative to remove these beads and Coles and Woolworths have both agreed to remove the products containing micro beads from their shelves.

There is a helpful list that has been composed that lists the products with micro beads in it. Micro beads appear on the list of ingredients usually as polyethylene and polypropylene. This is why it is so important to read the ingredients.

It’s great that something is now (finally) being done about this environmental and health hazard, however there are still so many chemicals that are being used in these products that are still harmful.

So rather than buying a crappy toxic scrub why not just make your own? It’s cheap and effective and best of all you aren’t killing marine wildlife.

  • 1 teaspoon of your facial oil cleanser or honey
  • ½ teaspoon of finely ground sea salt or coconut sugar (the salt is much courser so if your skin is sensitive go with the sugar)
  • 1-2 drop of lavender or lime essential oil.

  • Mix both together in a small bowl and then gently apply scrub to face.
  • Rinse with warm water and washcloth.
