How to have a healthy Coffee – (The primal way)

So I have been experimenting with a coffee that seems to be quite popular at the moment in the paleo/ primal world. It is called the bulletproof coffee, which seems to have originated from a chap called Dave Asprey. He discovered this while trekking in Tibet back in 2004 when he was having yak butter tea. He found that it gave him more energy. So cutting a long story short, he then started making the ‘bulletproof coffee ’.

Basically, it’s a paleo style coffee that has grass fed butter and coconut oil in it. It’s whizzed around in the blender until it goes all hot and frothy. The fats from the coconut oil and butter give you energy.  This also slows the speed in which the coffee is digested and enters your blood stream.

Aspery also claims that sometimes that edgy feeling people get from having coffee is actually from the toxins that are in the coffee due to the production process. I agree that if there are other substances in the coffee, it will put extra stress on your liver. It’s the same as eating loads of processed foods which your liver then has to convert to unwanted toxins so they can be eliminated from your system. In other words – Too many toxins = you feel like crap.

I have actually (until now) never been a huge coffee drinker, except when I was about 19 and studying fashion design and had to pull some all nighters to finish a project. Then I downed instant coffee like it was water. I didn’t enjoy it at all and added heaps of sugar to it to make it palatable. Oh my poor liver!

Anyway I started playing around with this ‘bulletproof coffee’ and let me tell you, it is delicious!!! I don’t get that crazy wired, feel like I’m on speed, buzz which I get from a lot of other types of coffee . I do however think that my liver is functioning a lot better these days which would also have a lot to do with my ability to tolerate coffee.

I don’t have it every day and I don’t I feel like I ‘need ‘it. If you suffer from headaches when you don’t have a coffee or you are super sensitive to coffee (or tea for that matter), it is a sure sign that you have a caffeine addiction or your lovely liver is overloaded and not eliminating toxins efficiently.

Coffee isn’t a bad thing; in moderation that is. The more important question is how do you have your coffee and how often? What do you have with it which is causing you damage to your body? Are you having 6 cups of instant a day with skim milk and 2 sugars or are you having a bullet proof coffee on the weekend with organic ingredients for the love of it? There are both come with the cup of coffee title but are worlds apart.

If you haven’t already noticed, I’m all about quality. Quality of what you have is what really matters. So here is my version of a bullet proof coffee

Ingredients

  • Organic fair trade coffee
  • 1 tablespoon Grass fed organic butter
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 scoop of powdered stevia
  • cinnamon on for the top

Directions

  1. Brew 1 scoop ( or less ) of coffee in your plunger or make a long black with your coffee machine
  2. Pour hot coffee into blender
  3. Add butter, coconut oil and stevia
  4. Whiz for 30 seconds
  5. Pour into a cup – add cinnamon to top

Variations

**To make a Mocha just add a tsp of cacao

** Add your own home-made cashew milk for a more nutty experience

** Make an ice coffee (or chocolate) with cashew milk and coconut cream. If you do this, just use the coconut cream not the butter.
